Separate low use from good storage

A low odometer can reflect careful ownership, long storage, interrupted registration or an incomplete history. Compare build date, first registration, inspections, service records and dated mileage. Ask where the Frontlander was kept, how often it was operated and whether fuel, 12V charging or tyre-pressure routines were recorded.

Build a dated mileage timeline

Join production, registration, inspection, service and listing dates to every available odometer record. Look for long gaps, repeated values and photographs that cannot be linked to the VIN. Low mileage is valuable only after the timeline and vehicle condition support it; an isolated dashboard image is not enough.

Test the 12V battery after normal rest

A battery charged immediately before inspection may pass a brief voltage check while still holding little reserve. Record battery identity and age, resting and loaded condition using the correct procedure, terminal security and evidence of repeated jump-starting. Confirm startup again after an appropriate rest period when timing allows.

Inspect tyres and brakes for storage effects

Tyres can age, crack or flat-spot without accumulating distance. Brake discs can corrode and calipers or parking-brake components can drag. Check date codes, pressure history, vibration, braking consistency, wheel temperature after the test and whether corrosion clears normally or reveals a deeper service need.

Review fuel, fluids and cooling

Ask when fuel was added and whether the engine reached operating temperature during storage. Inspect oil, coolant, brake fluid and visible hoses or seals according to the selected version’s service information. Do not promise that an additive or short idle period reverses stale fuel, condensation or time-expired maintenance.

Look for moisture, corrosion and pests

Check cabin smell, carpets, spare-wheel well, door seals, drain areas, engine bay, wiring and underbody. Storage buildings can expose a vehicle to humidity, rodents, dust or nearby industrial contamination. Photograph evidence before cleaning so preparation does not erase the cause or extent of deterioration.

Use a progressive recommissioning test

Start with stationary checks and diagnostics, then move through low-speed controls, braking, steering, transmission or hybrid operation, temperature stability and a longer road load. Reinspect for leaks, hot wheels, warnings and abnormal smells. Stop rather than extending the test when a safety-relevant fault appears.

Price time-dependent work openly

List battery, tyre, brake, fluid, filter, cleaning and diagnostic work separately from cosmetic preparation. State whether each item is required before inland transport, before shipping or after arrival. Preserve before-and-after records so the buyer can distinguish original condition from recommissioning work.

Challenge the reason for long storage

Storage may follow slow sales, interrupted registration, accident repair, an unresolved warning, estate handling or simple low use. Ask for a consistent explanation supported by ownership, service and location records. Inspect paint, fasteners, glass dates and diagnostic history so an attractive low odometer does not divert attention from repair or administrative risk.

Match recommissioning to the destination

A vehicle prepared for a mild China climate may still need different tyres, fluids, corrosion protection or battery planning for severe heat, cold or coastal use. Confirm destination workshop support and parts before shipment. Do not postpone a safety-relevant brake, tyre, leak or electrical fault merely because similar work might be cheaper after arrival. Record the accepted work, test result and responsible workshop beside the VIN so the arrival inspection can distinguish known preparation from new transport damage or deterioration.
